The effect of fuel properties for PM emissions on diesel engines with and without a diesel particulate filter (DPF) or a continuous regeneration DPF (CR-DPF) was evaluated. Without DPF or CR-DPF, the effect of fuel properties for PM emissions depended on engine types. On the other hand, PM emissions were considerably decreased by using the DPF. In the case of using the CR-DPF, however, fuels with sulfur content of 500ppm could not reduce PM emissions. The sulfur content of 50ppm could reduce PM emissions for a sufficient level. It was concluded that sulfates could be formed inside of the CR-DPF by using high sulfur fuels.
