Thin-rimmed gears are often used in airplane to meet the lightweight need. But the stress calculation problem for the strength design of these gears has not been solved so far. This paper analyzes the deformation and bending stresses of a three-dimensional, thin-rimmed spur gear by setting up a whole gear deformation FEM model and exerting the tooth loads obtained by the loaded tooth contact analysis on the model. Root stresses, rim stresses and web stresses are calculated exactly. It is found that not also the tooth root is the stress dangerous point, but also the joint of the rim and web. Especially, when the rim is designed to be very thin, stresses in the joint of the rim and web will become very big, even much bigger than the root stresses. So, this paper suggests that the joint stress analysis should be other item as important as the root stress for the strength calculation of the thin-rimmed gear design.
