An experimental study on extinction limits of dust flame has been performed in order to develop a new explosion suppression system applied to dust explosions. Water was used as suppressant agent, which was harmless and could be obtained with ease. The experiment was conducted in a vertical duct (bottom-end opened) of 0.2 x 0.2 m square cross section and 2 m long with top-end closed or opened. The powder of lycopodium, whose has been usually an standard powder in basic studies for dust explosions, was used as sample powder in this study. The results are as follows. (1) Although lean concentration of the dust cloud, post flames appear behind the leading flame, which is a different aspect from premixed gaseous flames. (2) It takes long time for water sprays to quench the flames (the first, the second) entirely than that of premixed gaseous flames. (3) Taking into consideration of the structure of the dust flame in a duct is important to examine the optimizing condition of the water sprays.
