A method of improving the frictional property of a sliding leadscrew is proposed. Compressed air, the pressure of which is limited to the range that the screw shaft and the nut keep contact, is supplied between the tread flanks so as to support a part of axial load. This report explains the basic experiments using a cylindrical model performed to obtain fundamental data for development of the "half-floating leadscrew".
