Diamagnetic levitation is known for a long time, but engineering applications have not yet been investigated. Modern permanent magnets make it possible to levitate an object of macroscopic size completely contact-free at room temperature without any energy input (passive levitation). Electrostatic glass actuators on the other hand are a promising new concept. Their stunning simplicity, together with their ability to outperform their electromagnetic counterparts at small size, make them potentially applicable for future HDD-type devices. Functional components have been demonstrated.
