When the usual current command for the voice coil motor (VCM) is been replaced by a simpler voltage command, the same servo performance can be obtained by placing an adaptive pre-filter between servocontroller output and voltage driver input. The adaptation is required in order to compensate for heat-induced variations of VCM resistance. The paper reports the experimental results obtained with an actual disk during operation, in which an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is used as VCM resistance estimator and implemented on a DSP, in a computationally efficient way.
