Phosphoric acid fuel-cell power units featuring environmentally-friendly qualities and high power generation efficiency has been studied in various fields. Entrusted by the Ministry of the Environment, Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. installed a garbage methane fermentation facility and a fuel-cell power plant using biogas in the Port Island area of Kobe. The plant started accepting garbage in September 2001,and is presently conducting trial operations. To date, 1,707 tons of garbage have been received, and a total of 306,471 m^3 of biogas has been produced and used in the fuel cell and the boiler. The power generated by the fuel cell has totaled 448,334 kWh, primarily for use within the facility, with the excess power being sold in grid-connected operation.
