Recently owing to the increase in the consumption of gas oil, it is anticipated a supply of petroleum coke which is made in refining petroleum process is serious oversupply. Petroleum coke is cheaper than coal. So over the coming 5∿20 years, there is a possibility that petroleum coke will be the most economical fuel for power generation plants. Given that ignitability and combustibility are problematic because of its characteristically the low volatility, requirements are growing for a petroleum coke-dedicated, pulverized fuel-fired, high-efficiency burner for conventional boilers. Accordingly, attention was drawn to A-PM (Advanced-Pollution Minimum) burner, had important achievement as a low-NOx burner, and which promotes excellent ignitability. Using the A-PM burner as a base, flow velocity was optimized, while improvements were also made in terms of the concentration separation performance for fuel and primary air, as well as the flame stabilizer structure. A petroleum coke-fired burner was thus designed, and combustion tests were carried out at actual scale. As a result, satisfactory ignition stability, NOx, and dust characteristics were achieved for petroleum coke with volatile content under 10%, similar to those associated with pulverized coal combustion
