With online analysis and diagnosis system of a large-scale steam turbine generator unit, the failure or excursion of any parameter in the whole acquisition data will lead to failure of one or more analysis and diagnosis functions. This paper will present some ideas concern one remedy, namely a virtual sensor. As soon as the failure of a parameter is affirmed, the virtual sensor can produce a substitute. This paper gives an example to expand on the theoretical basis of the virtual sensor, the characteristics and process of this method, and especially a genetic algorithm to be introduced to select and optimize the input parameters.
