Failure in a gas turbine can occur due to variety of reasons involving design deficiencies, inadequate material properties, manufacturing defects, installation problems, inadequate controls settings, and improper operation & maintenance procedures. These failures can have a major impact on the economics and safety of a plant. This paper presents commonly used failure analysis tools that a failure analyst can utilize and lists typical sources of failures including failure analysis guidelines. With the advent of advanced technology gas turbines operating at higher cycle pressure rations and firing temperatures, reliability and durability of these machines are of significant importance. To address high technology gas turbines related issues, advanced condition monitoring techniques such as pyrometry, aero-thermal analysis and advanced vibration analysis techniques are discussed. Some statistics relating to causes of failure are provided. Four case studies illustrating failure investigation guidelines outlined in the paper are included.
