The combination of improved variable gap type capacitive displacement transducer and strain gauge method is newly devised to measure the elastic deformation of tool-workpiece interface in cold forging. A deep hole is bored close to the inside surface of the die container. A steel pin is located in the hole to detect the minute displacement near the die-workpiece interface. The move of the pin changes the electrode gap of the capacitive transducer and is transduced to capacity change. The drawback of inherent non-linearity which variable gap type capacitive transducer has is removed by linearlizing its characteristic electronically. Displacement of the installation position of transducer is measured simultaneously by stain gauge method to adjust the measurement obtained from the transducer. This method is applied to the measurement of die deformation in backward extrusion process. Displacement distribution over die-workpiece interface under various condition is obtained. It is proved that newly developed method is effective for the measurement of die deformation in forging.
