Some problems in the process of cutting magnesium alloy are chip combustion and hydrogen gas generation from the reaction with water. There is a great possibility of chip combustion under dry cutting or with mineral oil coolant, and the trouble with emulsion coolants is that hydrogen gas is generated and treatment of waste fluid is costly. In this paper, a new system for cutting magnesium alloy with oil film on water fog cutting fluid (OoW) is developed. As a result, magnesium alloy can be machined with same high accuracy achieved by emulsion coolant in a safe, eco-friendly way.
