This paper describes an economic evaluation of gas turbine inlet air cooling system using water spray cooler for the augmentation of gas turbine output in summer. Gas turbines have been used to meet peak demands of electric utilities in summer. The problem with gas turbine capacity is that the highest electric peak demands occur during times of high ambient temperature. High ambient temperatures result in substantially lower gas turbine output from ISO rating. Inlet air cooling using water spray cooler can be reverse this degradation and increase electrical output. The system that considered in this study is composed of a gas turbine of rated capacity 152MW and a spray cooler with 8 spray skids. It is assumed that the sprayed water for the air-cooling is supplied to the amount as much as necessary to evaporate water without any rest vapor. The calculated temperature at the bell mouth of the gas turbine compressor was compared to measured data at the Seo-Inchon plant last summer in 1999. The black box model for gas turbine is constructed using performance correction curve data provided by gas turbine maker. The initial cost, fuel cost, maintenance cost, and benefit from the output augmentation was considered for the economic analysis.
