This paper will report how heat transfer can be augmented by inserting a micelle squeezer at the inlet of the turbulent pipe flow drag-reduced by surfactant additives. The micelle squeezer gives very high shear to the flow and the rod-like micelles formed with surfactant molecules, which remarkably reduce both drag force of the flow and heat transfer, are broken by the high flow shear at the flow inlet. From this, the range of the flow velocity, that a drag reducing effect and a heat transfer reducing effect occur, decreases. It is possible that the reduction of heat transfer performance in the heat exchanger is prevented. This effect could be correlated to the wall shear rate in the micelle squeezer. This strategy can be applied for heat exchangers, which occupy the small part of district cooling flow system.
