For the purpose of making the cooling device of the diesel engine small, the single cylinder engine with a 2.8-liter swept volume, which has the combustion chamber coated with FGM (Functionally Gradient Material) containing zirconia ceramics, was manufactured for the fundamental experimental study. The FGM ceramics coating engine reduces the heat rejection quantity to the coolant around a combustion chamber. The total cooling loss consisting of the coolant around a combustion chamber and charged air coolant decreased and the exhaust energy increased with intake air temperature. The size of the coolant device of the engine can be reduced by using the FGM ceramics coating combustion chamber and by increasing intake air temperature. And we confirmed that higher fuel injection pressure makes brake specific fuel consumption low.
