The present study deals with the numerical modeling of two-phase bubbly flows in a subcooled-boiling flow channel using the particle tracking method. It is an on-going project whose final aim is to develop a computer code to more accurately predict, with physics-based mechanistic models, the Departure from Nuclear Boiling (DNB) under PWR accidental conditions. The code is expected to best utilize the features of the particle tracking method to incorporate a mechanistic DNB model with a multi-dimensional numerical simulation. For the first stage of the present study, this paper reports the development of bubble dynamic and heat-transfer models, and the validation of the models by comparing simulation results with experimental data. Simulations have been conducted of adiabatic bubbly flows with air-water or saturated R123 as working fluids, and of subcooled-boiling bubbly flows of water. The simulation results have been compared with the experimental data available in the literature of the bubble-size distribution and the void-fraction profile. The agreement between simulation and experimental results is reasonably good, showing encouraging potential of the present model.
