Axial velocity maps of interstitial flow through a water-saturated packed bed were measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to understand mass transport in porous media. The obtained maps showed that channel flows with higheraxial velocity were induced not only nearthe wall but also in the internal region of the packed bed, and that velocity profiles of the channel flow normalized by mean flow velocity were influenced by the Reynolds number. Furthermore, pore structure in the packed bed was characterized by partitioning of void space and connection of pore sections in the axial direction in order to analyze the flow-structure correlation. Pore characterization showed that axial channels with long void spaces in the axial direction were present in the packed bed, and that most of the channel flows with higher axial velocity were induced in the axial channels. In addition, it was found from the analysis of the flow-structure correlation that the averaged flow rate through individual axial channels is almost proportional to the square of the net cross section of the axial channel.
