Existence of thermals in a cross-over phenomenon in a heat island flow is elucidated as follows: In a buoyant flow in stably stratified ambient, near the midplane with the time-averaged cross-over phenomenon with negative buoyancy, heat is transported both always by heat conduction from surroundings and intermittently by thermals with heat of the wire passing through only the central region with time-averagedly neutral buoyant condition. As a result, the time-averaged temperature near the midplane increases to the upward direction and approaches the ambient temperature. In the buoyant flow with an adiabatic ceiling, near the midplane with the time-averagedly neutral buoyant condition, heat is transported inter- mittently by thermals with heat of the wire and the intermittent cross-over phenomenon occurs. As a result, the time-averaged temperature near the midplane becomes constant to the upward direction. In the above two cases, thermals break away at the boundary between the time-averagedly positive and the neutral buoyant regions near the wire due to thermo-instability.
