The present experimental study is performed to examine particle separation under laminar natural convection heat transfer in a rectangular enclosure in which particles are suspended in liquid, where the particle density is identical to the liquid one before each experimental run. The enclosure is heated and cooled from side, respectively. A particle aggregation region is separated from the two particle-free regions at the bottom and top of the enclosure. The separation is found to be performed by two physical processes. One is deviation of particles from the boundary layer flow region due to particle inertia effects near the enclosure corners. The other is a particle settling and flotation in the vertical direction due to thermal stratification. The particle separation depends on the horizontal temperature difference between the hot and cold walls, but the effect of particle size is minute in the range considered here.
