A series of experiment was conducted to investigate the isothermal characteristics of a disk-type heat pipe. The function of the heat pipe is to transfer heat from the bottom surface to the top surface, where a least temperature difference is desired. A commercial silicon rubber heater was placed underneath the bottom surface of which the isothermal characteristics was not guaranteed. The heat pipe was made of aluminum alloy and the working fluid was perfluorocarbon. The diameter of the heat transfer surface was about 220 mm and the thickness was less than 20 mm. The temperature range of the top surface of the heat pipe was 90 to 130℃. The maximum temperature difference was observed to be between 0.5℃ and 2.5℃ depending on the performance variables as well as boundary condition of the top surface. The experimental results were analysed from the viewpoint of experimental planning method. The operating temperature, liquid fill charge ratio, thickness of the upper plate, and the height of the vapor channel were considered as influencing factors. The effect of the screen wick at the inner surface of the top plate was also investigated.
