A three-dimensional finite volume method for the vapor condensation on a grooved vertical tube has been developed. The SIMPLE algorithm is employed to solve the fully elliptic Navier-Stokes and energy equations on a general nonorthogonal colocated grid for both liquid-film and solid-tube regions. The free-surface location and its shape, an accurate prediction of which is essential for a method to be successful, are determined naturally by adopting a moving grid technique. By taking full account of the surface-tension effects, the condensation along the film/groove surface is carefully examined. Comparison with measured data of the fully developed flow for the groove of a triangular shape shows that the present surface-tracking scheme is accurate. The results, including the free-surface shape and the cross-sectional flow field, are presented in the paper.
