A numerical technique called symmetrical coupled Gauss-Seidel (SCGS) is implemented which solves the Navier-Stokes equations in primitive variables using staggered grid. The procedure is based on a coupled solution of the momentum and continuity equations for each control volume by the multigrid technique. The convective term is discretizd by stability-controllable second-order difference (SCSD) scheme which is a combination of second-order upwind and central difference with a weighting factor β(0≤β≤1). The scheme is especially suitable for implementing in the multigrid technique, since the ratio of the central difference scheme can be increased with the grid refinement, while keeping the computations at all grids with second-order accuracy and stable. Using the FAS technique, the algorithm is applied to the natural convection in a square cavity. Numerical results show that the convergence rate of the iterative procedure for the cases studied is far more rapidly than that with the single grid technique.
