The ignition behavior of a single coal particle has been studied using microgravity environment. A single coal particle of 1.0 mm diameter is ignited by irradiating with four spot heaters arranged around the particle. Combustion behavior is recorded with a CCD camera, and temperature history of the particle is measured by a thermocouple attached to the particle. Also, emission of OH radical is observed. Ambient gas (O_2/N_2 or O_2/CO_2), heating rate and coal type are varied. Results show that devolatilization behavior depends on the coal type. According to the measurement of ignition temperature, heterogeneous ignition temperature becomes higher with the increase of heating rate, due to the growth of the volatile matter cloud around the particle. As to the ambient gas, oxygen concentration has a negative effect on ignition temperature. In O_2/CO_2 gas, ignition temperature seems to decrease compared with that of O_2/N_2 gas.
