The design and development of an insulated low heat rejection direct injection diesel engine requires a thorough knowledge of cylinder peak pressure, peak flame temperatures, and heat transfer rates, from the combustion gases to the cylinder wall surfaces and from cylinder wall to the coolant and the surroundings. This type of information will be helpful in designing energy efficient internal combustion engine with respect to severe thermal loading and metallurgical limitations on engine components.[figure]
