To realize the nuclear fuel cycle, the FBR (fast breeder reactor) plant system, which plays the main role in the cycle, must have a high economical advantage. If lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is used as the coolant of the FBR in place of sodium, the intermediate heat-transport system required for the sodium-cooled reactor would be eliminated, and rationalization of the plant system design would be expected. A small LBE-cooled reactor which adopts natural circulation cooling to eliminate the mechanical pump is promising. To aid natural circulation and provide sufficient buoyant force for the coolant, a gas-driven "lift pump" is examined. For a water/gas system with a riser of comparatively small diameter, a design method for a "gas lift pump" derived from experimental results has been proposed. However, few paper deal with the gas lift pump for LBE in a riser of large diameter. To obtain basic information about the gas lift [figure]pump for LBE, and confirm the applicability of the design method, experiments with three risers (inner diameters : Φ69.3mm, Φ106.3mm, Φ155.2mm) were performed using LBE facility (see Fig.1) in CRIEPI. The main results are as follows. (1) The LBE flow rate in the case of small riser is the largest, and that of large riser is lowest under the same amount of gas injection (see Fig.2). An efficient effect of a gas lift pump is not achieved in the case of large riser. (2) A general tendency of LBE flow rate obtained from the design method is corresponding to the experimental results in risers with small diameters. In the case of large riser, this design method yields excessively high LBE flow rate. It is consider that the reason for this is that the three-dimensional behavior of bubbles becomes remarkable in the riser with the large diameter, but in the design method, based on the effect of the pump was assumed to be one-dimensional.[figure]
