When phase change material contacts a hot (or cool) surface and melting (or solidification) occurs, the heat transfer on the surface is noticeably enhanced. This paper presents a novel insight into the mechanisms of heat transfer enhancement in a cylindrical wall and a spherical wall induced by solid-liquid phase change based on the analogy between heat conduction with an internal heat source and phase change heat transfer. Two kinds of interface heat transfer enhancement with phase change heat transfer in a cylindrical or spherical wall were described. The factors influencing the degree of heat transfer enhancement on the interface were clarified and their influencing effects were quantitatively analyzed. Both the novel insight and the analysis contribute to effective application of phase change heat transfer enhancement techniques.
