Numerical solutions for air flow and heat transfer in two-dimensional wavy-plate channels with sinusoidal wall corrugations are presented. Constant property, periodically developed, laminar forced convection is considered with the wavy plates maintained at a uniform wall temperature. The steady-state governing equations for continuity, momentum, and energy transport are solved numerically using finite-volume techniques for a non-orthogonal, non-staggered grid, and the SIMPLE algorithm for the pressure-velocity coupling. Results for the velocity and temperature distributions, isothermal Fanning friction factor f, and Colburn factor j are presented for air flow rates in the range of 5⪇Re⪇1500 in wavy-plate channels of different sinusoidal wall corrugation severity and plate separation. The results highlight the convective behavior, which is characterized by lateral vortices that are generated in the wall trough regions, and the effect of plate spacing and waviness on the enhanced thermal-hydraulic performance. The swirl behavior, which develops as the axial flow gets separated downstream of the wall-corrugation peaks at a critical Re, and a re-circulation is formed, its strength and coverage is seen to be a function of Re, wall corrugation, and plate separation. Also, the surface waviness induced periodic disruption and thinning of the boundary layers results in high local heat fluxes near the peak wall region. The average heat transfer coefficient increases many fold compared to that in a parallel flat-plate channel, and, even though the concomitant pressure drop penalty also increases, 2 to 18 times enhanced heat transfer for constant pumping power is obtained.
