This paper describes the effect of the reverse flow on the heat transfer and flow of mixed convection in a horizontal square duct with heat transfer side and bottom walls. The size of the duct was 20mm high, 20mm wide and 800 mm long, and the first half 400mm of the duct was insulated thermally (Fig.A-1). Numerical analysis was performed in three-dimensional form for eleven kinds of entrance fluid temperatures (T_i=5℃∿55℃) at constant wall temperatures (T_w=60℃). At the entrance of the duct, the flow had fully developed laminar velocity distribution (Reynolds number Re=100). The working fluid was water, and the temperature dependency of kinetic viscosity and thermal conductivity was considered in the analysis. Three-dimensional elliptic governing equations for the conservation of mass, momentum and energy were solved in an unsteady state by finite difference method. [figure] The heat transfer behavior was discussed corresponding to the flow. Numerical results show that the flow swirls periodically along the flow direction and a reverse flow appears on the upper wall. The size of flow reversal increases with a linear function of Richardson numbers, namely, the ratio of Grashof number to Reynolds number square, Ri (=Gr/Re^2) and Prandtl number (Fig.A-2). The effect of thermal properties due to various inlet temperatures also affects the local heat transfer distribution. The local heat transfer on the bottom wall increases with the reverse flow on the upper wall because the local flow is accelerated near the bottom wall. Average Nusselt number on the heated wall tends to increase with the power function of Richardson number and Prandtl number. [figure]
