Life support systems for manned space activities consume immense quantities of energy, mostly in the form of thermal energy to heat their physical or/and chemical reactors. For Japanese space development, solar energy is the only energy source available for long-term space activities. It is therefore necessary to utilize solar energy as thermal energy. A conceptual model of a self-contained partially circulated life support system (SEPAL) has been designed. Its most significant feature is that it includes an energy supply subsystem. Test models of three key SEPAL subsystems-water decomposition, air revitalization and energy supply-have been constructed, and the performance of each subsystem is being evaluated. The water decomposition subsystem produces oxygen and hydrogen by the electrolysis of pure water supplied [figure] by the water recovery subsystem, driven by electrical power provided by the energy supply subsystem. Test results have shown that the electrolyzer can produce 600ℓ/day of oxygen as designed; however, the electrolysis voltage was found to be higher than the design specification. The energy supply subsystem provides thermal, light and electrical energy to the other subsystems. A test model of a Stirling engine generator developed as a candidate for the electrical power generator has demonstrated maximum indicated power and efficiency values of 636 W and 32%, respectively. While the performances of these subsystems have not been as high as expected, the reasons for the performance shortfalls have been made clear and will be addressed.
