High temperature internal friction peaks of Ni-based superalloy were measured along [100], [110] and [111] direction with the flex and twist modes, and symmetry of lattice defects responsible for internal friction was determined. A peak found around 800℃ after aging did not show the tetragonal symmetry, although it has been attributed to the redistribution of Al atoms to Ni atom sites in Ni_3Al precipitates in the alloy and, herefore, supposed to show the tetragonal symmetry of the defects. After over-aging by a prolonged time, the tetragonal symmetry appeared. Such a change of internal friction peak, which exhibits significant difference depending on the history of a material exposed to high temperature, is found to be useful for judging the remaining lifetime of the material.
