Premature creep cracking and rupture incidents in high-energy piping have been related to the fine grained or intercritical weld heat affected zone. Weldment creep life can be reduced to 20% of base metal creep life when the HAZ region plays a roll in elevated temperature behavior. Fundamental understanding of the FG/ICHAZ creep damage has not been clearly defined. Creep tests were implemented for simulated singular HAZ regions and base metal of modified 9Cr-lMo (P91). It is found that the creep rates of the FGHAZ and ICHAZ regions are significantly greater than those of the coarse grained HAZ (CGHAZ) and base metal. Metallographic examination was conducted on the creep-ruptured specimens of the FGHAZ and ICHAZ. Carbide morphology and types in the HAZ regions were evaluated to define the mechanism of the premature creep failure in the FG/ICHAZ.
