Powder compacts of the Nb-Si-Al system were prepared by spark plasma sintering method, and their oxidation behavior and mechanical properties were investigated. Nb_3Si_5Al_2 matrix compacts with a composition of Nb-47Si-20Al (at%) showed extremely good oxidation resistance at 1373K-1573K, because thin protective Al_2O_3 scale was formed. However, the Nb_3Si_5Al_2 matrix compacts showed poor oxidation resistance at temperatures lower than 1273K. Nb substrates could be adhesively coated with Nb_3Si_5Al_2 layer by putting thin Al foil and Nb_3Si_5Al_2 powder on the substrates, and spark plasma sintering them. In the Nb_3Si_5Al_2 layer, several cracks were observed, but this problem is expected to be improved by replacing Nb_3Si_5Al_2 layer with Nb_3Si_5Al_2-Al_2O_3 composite layer according to finite element analysis.
