Playing a significant role as the essential means of transport, railways in People's Republic of China are one of the busiest railways in the world. Therefore, an all-out effort has been being maid to increase its capacity and to improve its quality. The Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Rail project is one of such activities. Very many big cities are located on the route and that situation is very much similar to that of Tokaido Shinkansen, making the Shinkansen system the best reference for the project. The speech will also refer to another big problem of Chinese railways : the scarcity of urban railways.
