This paper describes Kyushu Shinkansen and 800 Series Electric Car. The southern section of Kyushu Shinkansen between Shin-Yatsushiro and Kagoshima-Chuo on the Kagoshima Route will start operation on March 13,2004. Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu) has been expecting it long time. "TSUBAME" is nickname of Kyushu Shinkansen train, which determined by public offering. "TSUBAME" brings North and South Kyushu closer, dramatically! The trip between Kagoshima and Hakata will be shortened to about 2 hours and 10 minutes. We developed 800 Series Car that employs many new technologies. For example, New-ATC train control system enables possible safer and more comfortable operation. We have already made 5 train sets by now, they are trying several tests at main line. 800 Series Car creates a warm and relaxing atmosphere never before experienced on a super-express train with passenger cabins using Kyushu materials and traditional Japanese colors. This paper focuses on the growth potential of Kyushu Shinkansen and 800 Series Car.
