A non-dismantling inspection line for AC induction motors for the Series 300 Shinkansen cars was put into regular operation in January 1998 at the Hamamatus Workshop, which is responsible for the overhaul inspection of Shinkansen cars. Unlike a DC motor, an AC induction motor feature a design that allows substantial savings in maintenance work since inspection and repair of commutators is not required. Heretofore, however, no special inspection method had been established and all motors, AC induction motors and DC motors alike, had to be disassembled for inspection. This situation led to a study aimed at developing a new method taking advantage of the AC induction motor design for inspecting traction motors without disassembling them. The success of the study depended primarily on how abnormal condition of bearings could be diagnosed and the bearing grease replaced withot disassembling the bearing. Technical development in 1991 has established a new method to inspect bearings without disassembly by means of applying vibration, grease analysis and other techniques. The study further led to successful development of devices for cleaning and greasing bearings without removing them from the motor. These techniques and devices represent the world's first use of non-dismantling inspection of AC induction traction motors for rolling stock.
