Textbooks on swimming technique say that the palm should move along S-shaped curve in order to get large thrust and high efficiency. It is also said that propelling force is produced mainly by lift acting on palm. This report shows how lift and drag contributes to propelling force in crawl strokes from an engineering point of view. It is fundamentally based on three-dimensional wing theory for large aspect ratio wing. Modifications to that theory are done, because palm, whose hydrodynamic force is considered, has a small aspect ratio. The positions of shoulder, elbow and wrist are considered to be given, and the target of this report is to find the best direction of palm to get maximum thrust at every instance. The results show that drag pays more important role than considered before. Guide to wrist twist and bend is also given.
