Three-dimensional kinematics of the knee joint during the stance phase in running was studied in order to discuss the influences of foot pronation and shoe sole stability upon knee motion. 40 retroreflective video markers were attached to the skin of thigh and shank. The trajectories of these markers during running with several unstabilized running shoes were measured by using VICON motion analyzing system. The relative motions between tibia and femur were calculated by using the least mean square method. It was found that the motion in knee joint at the breaking phase in running was different as compared with walking. The valgus and internal rotation in the knee joint resulting from foot pronation were investugated. The maximum values of these rotation angles in unstabilized shoes were increased as compared with normal shoes. There results were suggested that the shoe sole stability affects knee motion during running as well as foot motion.
