The request for high quality passenger cars and the advent of CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and EV (Electric Vehicle) demand quieter power transmission systems. To achieve this goal, highly accurate gears required. Since gears used in a transmission system are normally heat-treated, a need for high-precision gear finishing processes arises sharply. Among various finishing processes that have been developed, we focused on the gear-honing method, which achieves high productivity as compared with gear grinding methods. Keeping the high productivity as is, we have had this process more precise by applying the synchronization technology to the spindle (i. e. honing wheel spindle) and the work spindle. The newly developed gear honing machine utilizing this technology has proven that it can reduce machining time by more than 20% and improve the gear accuracy by more than one rank in AMGA class against conventional, non-synchronous machines.
