The quality of heat-treatment is very important in strengthening gears. To predict the quality of heat-processed gears before manufacturing, the authors are developing a heat-treatment simulation program ; GRANTAS. The effects of gear width on carburized and quenched gears are studied by experiments and 3-dimensional simulation analysis. The result of simulation is well similar to that of experiments, and the gear width affects on the core hardness, the distortion and the residual stress of a carburized gears. And simulation results indicate a certain dimension of the gear width which dose not affect the residual stress.
