Dynamic behavior of smooth hysteretic systems subjected to both external and parametric excitation is analyzed numerically. Wen's differential equation model for hysteresis, which can be applied to a large class of hysteretic systems, is used. Frequency response curves of several softening and hardening hysteretic systems are calculated by direct numerical integration using shooting method. Period doubling bifurcations are observed in softening hysteretic systems. Bifurcation diagrams are plotted in control and system spaces. It is shown that the period doubling bifurcations exit in the system with wide loops or strong softening characteristics even if external excitation vanishes. Finally, chaotic solution which follows the period doubling bifurcation and similar chaotic solution of bilinear hysteretic system as well as chaotic solution for the case of no external excitation are presented.
