In this paper, the problem of pump surging in networks of identical pumps is investigated. 2 and 3 oscillator networks are studied. The oscillators are simple models for pumps near surging. Each oscillator is initially on the verge of a Hopf bifurcation. For coupled pumps, divergence instability arises. Identical oscillators lead to symmetry in the system. Multiple zero eigenvalues lead to symmetry breaking through divergence. Coupling of Hopf and Divergence modes also occurs. By considering symmetry breaking, dynamics on a lower dimensional space can be analyzed.
