In assessing the reliability of the emergency core cooling system (ECCS) in case of loss-of-coolant accidents of light-water-reactors, the mist spray cooling has been investigated experimentally and analytically. Recently, for safety systems of the new generation light water reactors, the heat removal by pouring spray water on containment vessel is proposed. In the present study, boiling heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) of mist cooling were investigated experimentally. The effects of droplet flow rate and air flow rate on the boiling heat transfer were examined. In the present experiments, the air flow rate was used at 0,40,75,120,and 150 l_n/min, respectively. The liquid flow rate was 0.3,1.8,4.0,and 8.0 l/hr, respectively. The critical heat flux increased with the liquid flow rate. The critical heat flux decreased as the air flow rate increase. A cooling limit, i.e., the CHF, is in agreement with heat transfer based on latent heat of droplets on the heater.
