JESSICA is a full-scale model of the target-reflector-moderator-system for the European Spallation Source, ESS, which has been built up at the COSY accelerator in the research center in Juelich, Germany. JESSICA has been designed for prototyping experiments for the ESS and to validate simulation methods concerning the transport and interaction of particles as well as to optimize the technical layout of the target-reflector-moderator system and to compare the results by using different moderator materials. Additionally we are able to evaluate the behaviour of the technical layout and to optimize the design especially concerning the moderator system that has to be driven with different fluids, solids and pellets in fluids. The ESS-like mock-up consists of a target, a reflector, three ambient water moderators and a cryogenic moderator system. The reflector consists of a stainless steel construction filled with lead rods except of the neutron beam lines. The target is a stainless steel construction filled with liquid mercury. The cryogenic moderator system is a closed loop including a cold head to achieve temperatures of about 10 to 90 K in the moderator material. This cryogenic moderator can be positioned below the target. One ambient water moderator can also be positioned beside the cryogenic moderator below the target and two additional positions for ambient water moderators are above the target. JESSICA became already operational with water and methane hydrate as moderator material at about 20 K. Other moderator materials will already be used at JESSICA to compare the neutronic performance of different moderator materials such as liquid hydrogen, solid methane as a block, solid methane pellets surrounded by liquid hydrogen, methane hydrate surrounded by liquid hydrogen. The engineering design of JESSICA including the cryogenic moderator system and safety aspects will be discussed. Results of the neutronic performance of different moderator materials will briefly be shown.
