AECL has initiated a program to develop a highly cost-effective family of Advanced CANDU[○!R] Reactors (ACR). In designing the Heat Transport System (HTS) and Balance of Plant (BOP), the goal is to reduce the capital and specific costs while meeting the design and safety requirements with robust safety margins. The ACR is the next evolution of the successful CANDU 6 reactor design. The basic CANDU features have been retained, including horizontal pressure tubes, on-power fuelling and fuel handling, separate low-pressure, low-temperature heavy water (D2O) moderator, and the ability to burn a variety of fuels (fuel cycle flexibility). Five major design changes have been made to meet the ACR design targets. These include : light water replacement of heavy water as coolant, a compact core design resulting from fuel-channel lattice-pitch reduction, use of Slightly Enriched Uranium (SEU) CANFLEX[○!R] fuel bundles, negative coolant void reactivity, and higher HTS and Turbine Generator (TG) operating pressures and temperatures. This paper describes the optimization of key HTS and BOP operating parameters for the ACR-700,and the basis of the proposed design conditions. The optimization of the conventional Balance Of Plant (BOP) was conducted jointly by AECL and Hitachi, Ltd. of Japan.
