The object of this brief communication is to outline the results of photoelastic method for investigating the effect of short spans on the two-dimensional distributions of stress set up in simple beams of uniform rectangular crosssection, supported at extremities and loaded at middle point. As is well known, the common theory of flexure holds true while the span of beam is considerably long compared with the depth of cross-section, and for the beams having short span the distributions of stress differ from the results of ordinary theory and become much more complicated. In this paper it is shown that how the length of short spans effects on the distributions of stress, the limiting value of the span is about at least ten times of the depth of beam in order to follow the common theory, and the dangerous parts in the beam are found not at the bottom of beam at central section but in any respect in the neighbourhood of contact point at which the load is applied.
