• Bending beyond the elastic limit causes after stresses which increase with the curveture of the elastic line. First under certain assumptions is found the relation between the bending moment and the curveture of the elastic line for a straight beam and then the distribution and the amount of the after stresses are calculated. Next the expression for the elastic line and the permanent deflection of the center line are found. Finally it is shown, that the elastic limit determined from tension tests will not coincide with that from bending tests.
