Although there are formulae for theoretical thermal efficiencies of internal combustion engine cycles, these are based on ideal closed cycles in which the working medium is supposed to remain unchanged quantitatively and qualitatively throughout the whole period of the cycle. In the cylinder of a Diesel engine and other internal combustion engines, however, the working medium does not remain unchanged quantitatively or qualitatively. The Expanding medium in the working stroke has a different quantity and quality from that of the medium in the compression stroke. The working medium, therefore, does not make and ideal closed cycle in the cylinder. The writer theats, in this paper, the theorctical thermal cfficiencies of actual cycles which seem likely to take place in the Diesel engine cylinder. He has worked out the following : -(1) The new formaulae for theoretical thermal effciencies. (2) Comparison of thermal efficiencies in the airless injection engine and the air injection engine under the new theory. (3) Comparison of thermal efficiencies of various cycles based on the new theory. He refers in conclusion to some experiments which were carried out with Diesel engines to verify some of the theoretical propositions made by him, and to the method of finding the best conditions for the complete combustion of fuel oil with the solid injection system, which may, according to his reasoning in Art. 8,give better over-all efficiency than the air injection system, if the combustion efficiencies of both are equal.
