Mucous plugging plays a major role in acute and fatal asthma. These secretions derive from epithelial cells via a cascade involving a key growth factor receptor (EGFR). Neutrophil recruitment and activation induces expression and phosphorylation of these receptors, resulting in increased mucin expression. Neutrophil release of neutrophil elastase causes mucin expression and secretion, resulting in airway obstruction. From this and other work it is concluded that the interaction among cells in key to the pathogenesis of allergic airway disease.
