By employing mold allergens (derived from Alternaria, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Mucor, and Candida) clinical diagnostic studies on nasal allergy were carried out in 710 patients, who are known to be affected with nasal allergy, by means of skin test, Prausnitz-Kustner reaction (P-K reaction), sensitized red cell hemagglutination (Boyden method), precipitation test and biopsy of affected nasal mucous membranes. The patients affected with mold nasal allergy are treated by means of desensitization. The results obtained were as follows: (1) The skin test. One hundred and ninty cases showed positive immediate reaction (26.7%); eight cases showed positive delayed reaction (1.1%). (2) Of 190 cases of immediate positive tests, 78 cases (41.1%) showed positive to the single mold allergen, 79 cases (41.5%) showed positive not only to the mold but also house-dust and 33 cases (17.3%) were positive either to pollens or bacterial extracts. (3) The immediate positive test. The largest number of cases appeared to occur in the months of April and October. (4) Provocative reactions were revealed in 92 cases of 136 cases (67.6%); P-K reaction was positive in 39 cases of 91 cases (42.8%). (5) Boyden's reaction. 7 cases out of 19 were positive in the test; precipitation was positive in 3 cases out of 39. (6) The color of the nasal mucous membrane during the non-attack period of mold nasal allergy is usually pinkish or reddish in appearance. Biopsy examinations may reveal 2 types of affection; the type 1 is similar to the changes caused by pollens and house-dust; in the type 2 the increased fibrosis and round cell infiltration were observed. (7) Furthermore, the mold nasal allergy may be classified into the atopic and non-atopic types. The atopic type is positive in immediate skin reaction, provocative reaction and P-K reaction. The nasal mucous membrane is red in appearance. Microscopically the changes belong to type 1. These allergens might be Alternaria and Cladosporium. In the non-atopic type, the delayed type skin test, hemagglutination by Boyden method and precipitation reaction were positive. Moreover in that type the nasal mucous membrane was usually reddish and atrophic type. Histologically it belongs to type 2 and in the respect of micro-organisms most of them were Candida group of fungi. (8) In the desensitization treatment the effective cases were 71.4%.
