An analytical and experimental study was conducted on the formation of non-linear density stratification due to the injection of a liquid through a bottom-fill upward directed nozzle into a tank partially filled with a miscible liquid of a higher density. In the analysis, assuming Gaussian profiles of velocity and density of the plume, the average density and the flow rate of the plume were obtained as functions of height. Based on the results, the downward velocity of the liquid surrounding the plume was obtained. Utilizing these convection terms, the temporal change of density stratification was obtained. The results by the use of a nozzle moving vertically were also shown. It was found that the most important parameter is non-dimensional nozzle radius.
